Sedation for Anxious Adults

A patient comfortably sedated during treatment

A racing heart in the waiting room, or a visit put off for years out of dread, is a familiar story for plenty of adults. Sedation gives those patients another way through the door.

What Is Sedation?

Sedation dentistry uses a calming aid to help adult patients get through an appointment they might otherwise avoid. It does not replace the gentle, unhurried care already built into every visit at Refresh Dental. It gives patients who need more than reassurance an additional option.

Who Is This For?

Sedation suits adult patients with dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, or a difficult past appointment behind them, as well as those who need a longer or more involved procedure completed in fewer visits. It is not offered to patients under eighteen.

What Happens?

Before recommending sedation, Dr Malunga discusses your medical history and the specific procedure planned, since the right option depends on both. Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, takes effect quickly and wears off soon after your appointment ends. Oral sedation involves taking a tablet before your visit and needs a bit more planning, including arranging a lift home.

Practical Considerations

If oral sedation is recommended, you will need someone to drive you home afterwards, and you should not drive or operate machinery for the rest of that day. Fasting instructions may apply depending on the option chosen, and the team will confirm exactly what to do before your appointment.

Realistic Expectations

Sedation helps manage anxiety during treatment. It does not change what the treatment itself involves or how long recovery takes for the underlying procedure, such as a filling or extraction. Dr Malunga will talk you through what to expect from both the sedation and the treatment itself before your appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be unconscious during treatment?

No. The sedation options offered at Refresh Dental are designed to help you feel calm and relaxed, not to put you to sleep. You will be able to respond to Dr Malunga throughout your appointment.

Can sedation be used for any treatment?

Sedation can be discussed for most general, cosmetic, or specialised procedures at Refresh Dental. Book a consultation and Dr Malunga will confirm whether it suits the treatment you need, whether that is a routine filling or something more involved.
